The murder victim is Rene DeVille, he is mentioned in the character sheets but isn’t played by anyone as he dies very early on in the script and therefore has no lines.

The scene opens in the bar room of a café on La Rue des Cafés in Paris. Its 1921 and Paris is full of artists and creatives trying to water colour over the horrors of the Great war by expressing emotions in their works of art, poetry and prose. They rarely have any money and when they do, they can be found drinking it away in the bars in Paris’ 9^th district.

The Café des Artistes is one such bar. A bar where tonight a tragedy will occur, Rene DeVille is about to be murdered, but maybe it isn’t such a tragedy after all, maybe its just desserts…

Camille: ‘I did give you those new leather trousers…I see you are wearing them this evening.’

Helmut : ‘Yes they are a little too tight.’

Camille : ‘Non, they are perfect, let me look, turn a little. Yes, perfect.’

Narrator : [Lets leave them to their conversation and look where Hummingbird is standing by the bar talking to Momo.]

Momo : ‘Ah, Hummingbird, you mentioned your tab, could you pay off some of it off perhaps, it is mounting up?’

Hummingbird : ‘I will pay it, of course I will, as soon as I get my next book published, I’m not a parasite.

Momo : ‘You take your time Monsieur there is no hurry... But there is no beer either.’

Hummingbird ‘ Let me see then …2…5…8…14 francs and … well what have we here… 5, 10, oh 20 centimes, these 1 and 2 centimes are no good to you no? Well, they pay for the pear I took earlier at least and the beer I’m about to pour myself.’
